The art work, which will be paid for from federal grant money, is intended to capture the history of the former shipyard.

Most of the work will be done by local artists, with the biggest payment of $379,000 going for artwork to frame an outdoor space. An additional $125,000 will be paid for a 15-foot tall bronze statue.

The artwork is expected to be in place by summer 2012.

The former shipyard, closed in 1974, is being developed into an area of homes, parks and businesses.
